BITUMEN 10/20 SUPPLIER IN THE UAE

Bitumen 10/20 is a hard penetration grade bitumen produced through the non-destructive refining of crude oil. Its penetration value ranges from 10 to 20 (0.1 mm), with a softening point between 58°C and 66°C, making it one of the hardest penetration grades available.

As a heavy-traffic grade, Bitumen 10/20 supports thinner pavement designs — using up to 30% less asphalt than traditional designs — while extending pavement life. It is commonly used in road construction and repair, and in the manufacture of hot mix asphalt for bases and wearing courses.

Bitumen 10/20 is sometimes confused with Oxidized Bitumen 115/15, since both have a penetration range near 10–20. However, the two products are not interchangeable: Oxidized Bitumen 115/15 has a much higher softening point (110–120°C) and cannot be used directly in asphalt production, unlike Bitumen 10/20, which is specifically formulated as a paving-grade binder.

Raha Oil supplies Bitumen 10/20 from Jebel Ali, UAE, with quality guaranteed to ASTM standards and confirmed through batch testing before shipment.

APPLICATION OF BITUMEN 10/20

Bitumen 10/20 is used across a wide range of construction and industrial applications, from road paving to waterproofing and pipe coating. Below are its most common uses:

Road Construction: Widely used as a binder in asphalt mixes, providing durability and flexibility to pavements while ensuring proper adhesion and cohesion with aggregates.

Asphalt Emulsions: Used to produce water-based bitumen dispersions applied in road maintenance activities, including surface treatments, tack coats, and chip seals.

Roofing Materials: Used in manufacturing roofing felt and shingles, providing waterproofing and weatherproofing protection for buildings.

Waterproofing: Applied as a waterproofing agent for basements, foundations, and retaining walls, forming a durable and impermeable barrier against water ingress.

Pipe Coating: Used to coat pipes in the oil and gas industry, providing corrosion resistance and insulation that extends pipeline lifespan.

Pavement Sealants: Applied to existing asphalt surfaces to enhance durability and protect against weathering and aging.

Adhesives: A key component in adhesives and sealants across various industries, providing bonding strength.

Soundproofing: Used in soundproofing materials for buildings and infrastructure, helping absorb sound and reduce noise transmission.

The specific application of Bitumen 10/20 can vary based on regional specifications, climate conditions, and project requirements, with its penetration grade indicating hardness and suitability for different uses.

THE 4 MAJOR TESTS OF BITUMEN 10/20

1.PENETRATION TEST: It measures the hardness or softness of bitumen by measuring the depth in tenths of a millimeter to which a standard loaded needle will penetrate vertically in 5 seconds. BIS had standardised the equipment and test procedure. A grade of 10/20  means the penetration value is in the range 10 to 20 at standard test conditions. In hot climates, a lower penetration grade is preferred.

2.SOFTENING POINT TEST: Softening point denotes the temperature at which the bitumen attains a particular degree of softening under the specifications of test. The test is conducted by using Ring and Ball apparatus. Also Temperature is noted when the softened bitumen touches the metal plate which is at a specified distance below. Generally, higher softening point indicates lower temperature susceptibility and is preferred in hot climates.

3.DUCTILITY TEST: Ductility is the property of bitumen that permits it to undergo great deformation or elongation. Ductility is defined as the distance in cm, to which a standard sample or briquette of the material will be elongated without breaking.

4.VISCOSITY TEST: Viscosity denotes the fluid property of the bituminous material and it is a measure of resistance to flow. At the application temperature, this characteristic greatly influences the strength of resulting paving mixes. Low or high viscosity during compaction or mixing has been observed to result in lower stability values.

PROPERTIES OF BITUMEN 10/20

Bitumen 10/20 is a premium-grade product with a dark brown to black color, similar in appearance to cement, and a semi-solid to viscous liquid form produced through the non-destructive refining of crude oil. Its exact chemical composition depends on the source crude oil and the refining process used.

Penetration Grade Bitumen 10/20 has a penetration value between 10 and 20 (tenths of a millimeter) and a softening point between 58°C and 66°C. Like other penetration grades, it has a thermoplastic property — similar to synthetic resin — softening when heated and hardening when cooled. Compared to other grades, Bitumen 10/20 has notably higher viscosity, which is characteristic of its hard-grade classification.

GUARANTY AND SAFETY OF BITUMEN 10/20

RAHA Oil guarantees the quality of Bitumen 10/20 through international inspection arrangements that verify quality and quantity during vessel loading, alongside internal QC batch testing before shipment. All shipments are guaranteed to meet ASTM standards.

PACKING OF BITUMEN GRADE 10/20

Bitumen packaging is a real concern, especially for export shipments — proper packaging guarantees safer delivery of the cargo. Packaging options vary depending on tonnage, type, and grade, since different bitumen grades have different levels of stiffness and viscosity. Bitumen 10/20 is commonly packed in new steel drums (150, 180, and 220 kg barrels), Jumbo Bags, or 300 kg Bitubags.
