Gilsonite Usage in Ink
GILSONITE USAGE IN INK & PAINT
Inks
ER resins, also known as “engineered resins,” refer to a purified fraction of uintaite. This fraction is significantly enriched in maltenes or asphaltenes compared to natural uintaite. It’s important to note that merely dissolving uintaite in a solvent and filtering the solution does not produce the purified fraction of uintaite as defined here. This simple filtration process does not alter the asphaltene to maltene ratio from that of natural uintaite.
The term “maltene” refers to the fraction of uintaite that dissolves when finely ground uintaite is mixed with 20 volumes of hot heptane at 80 degrees Celsius, and the solution is filtered through a 0.8-micron filter. Maltene-enriched fractions of uintaite, such as ER-140 and ER-115, have a higher weight ratio of maltenes to asphaltenes, preferably greater than 6, and even better if greater than 15. These resins are substantially free of asphaltenes, containing less than 2% by weight, and they are also free of ash.
Maltene-enriched ER resins have softening points below about 140 degrees relative to natural uintaite. They contain at least 50% fewer asphaltenes than natural uintaite, with some having at least 75% fewer and others at least 90% fewer. Additionally, these resins have reduced mineral-derived insolubles, or ash, which are below 0.1% by weight, preferably below 0.05%.
The maltene-enriched fractions of uintaite used in this invention consist of at least 60% maltenes, preferably at least 80%, and most preferably at least 90%. These ER resins with higher maltene content have lower softening points compared to natural uintaite and exhibit improved solution viscosity, viscosity stability, and melt viscosity compared to available grades of natural uintaite. The less soluble, high melting, asphaltene-enriched fractions are also considered ER resins.
SOLUBILITY OF GILSONITE POWDER
Gilsonite powder exhibits excellent solubility in aromatic solvents such as Benzene, Toluene, and Xylene, as well as in most chlorinated solvents. It also readily dissolves in aliphatic and low aromatic solvents like VM&P and other Naphtha, Oils, and Mineral Spirits, though the mixing time may be slightly longer in these cases. For easy solubility without heating, the pulverized grade is recommended. However, it is essential to note that Gilsonite is not soluble in water, alcohols, or acetone. When using Gilsonite ink powder, films produced showcase a dark color with minimal bronzing effect, and solutions do not thicken over time. The versatility of Gilsonite ink powder extends to its compatibility with drying oils, vegetable oils, rosins, hydrocarbon resins, elastomers, asphalts, and waxes, making it suitable for various specialty applications. However, its solubility in most alcohols and ketones is relatively limited.
GILSONITE AS AN INK STABILIZER
Gilsonite plays a crucial role in enhancing the performance of printing inks by serving as a stabilizer. Its benefits include:
- Improving runability of printing inks, particularly when ink supply is low.
- Reducing water absorption in offset printing inks, leading to improved print quality.
- Enhancing emulsification properties, preventing undesirable scumming during printing.
- Boosting the printing properties of metal effect inks, ensuring high-quality results.
Gilsonite achieves these benefits by adhering to ink molecules and facilitating their smooth movement, preventing clotting, and promoting a smoother flow of ink during printing. Its large molecules with repeating units make it an excellent stabilizer.
The particle size of Gilsonite, being 200 meshes, contributes to its odorless and soluble powder form in CS2 with a softening point of 145°C. Crude Gilsonite is not suitable for commercial use, and instead, pulverized Gilsonite, or Gilsonite dust, is handled with extra caution, stored in sacks as a safety measure due to its high volatility.
Derived from the surface active fraction of petroleum, Gilsonite is widely used in the ink industry to enhance dye receptivity, stabilize and varnish ink colors, and ensure optimal printing results. Its versatile properties make it a valuable stabilizing agent in various ink formulations.

Gilsonite Usage in Paint
PAINTS
In the realm of coating compositions, finding a balance between desirable traits such as cost-effectiveness, compatibility with various raw materials, and resistance to acid and alkali substances, while remaining non-corrosive to surfaces and weather-resistant, poses a challenge. However, there is one exceptional composition that encompasses all these sought-after properties: the one containing Gilsonite as a principal ingredient. A blend of Gilsonite and drying oil, for instance, exhibits these highly desirable qualities to a significant degree.
GILSONITE IN PAINT INDUSTRY
Gilsonite offers valuable properties that enhance the hardness and adhesion of paints. Particularly for paints exposed to harsh weather conditions or susceptible to corrosion, bituminous paints, including Gilsonite, are widely used and well-established.
When incorporated into asphalt base paints as a modifier, Gilsonite smoothens the surface and increases paint gloss. By adding Gilsonite, the overall quality of bitumen-based paints can be significantly improved. This mineral retains the beneficial characteristics of bitumen while effectively adhering to any surface.
The inclusion of Gilsonite in paint formulations results in excellent bonding with various materials, making it an ideal protective coating paint. In the paint industry, Gilsonite is recognized as a cost-effective additive compared to other similarly functional alternatives. Its unique properties and cost-effectiveness make it a preferred choice for achieving superior paint performance.
BENEFITS OF GILSONITE IN THE PAINT INDUSTRY
Gilsonite offers numerous advantages as an additive in the paint industry:
- Cost-effective solution for anti-corrosion paints.
- Excellent performance in wood paints and pipe coatings.
- Enables high-viscosity inks used in newspapers, magazines, and periodicals.
- Delivers high-quality, uniform black color printing for the ink industry.
- Enhances paint’s resistance to ultraviolet light, preventing color fading and maintaining sharpness.
- Utilized in bitumen-based paints for insulating water tanks and covering pipes.
- Imparts radiance and vibrancy to colors.
- Exhibits high resistance to acids, water, and chemicals.
- Serves as a cost-effective natural alternative to various resins in paint formulations.
GILSONITE IN AUTOMOTIVE PAINTS
Gilsonite paints find significant application in the automotive industry, particularly as chassis coatings and metal structure coatings due to their exceptional UV resistance. This mineral imparts valuable properties to paints and coatings, making them highly desirable for various automotive applications.
One of the notable advantages of Gilsonite is its abrasive and chemically neutral nature, rendering it highly resistant to acids, water, and chemicals. Consequently, it becomes a suitable choice for car radiators and waterproof coatings. By carefully adjusting the colloidal balance and eliminating oil and wax from bitumen, the properties of Gilsonite can be tailored. Surface appearance and coating adhesion are closely related to the presence and location of oils and waxes in the coating. Depending on the specific requirements, diverse formulations can be used to achieve various coating functionalities.
The high nitrogen content and natural asphalt properties in Gilsonite contribute to its exceptional adhesion capability. This unique feature allows these paints to be effectively used as anti-corrosion coatings and moisture-protective coatings for materials.
Furthermore, a specialized type of Gilsonite is employed in the production of asphalt black paints and polished oils. It can also create a black-brown colored solution used in the bitumen coating of gas and sewage pipes. The versatility and efficacy of Gilsonite-based paints make them a valuable asset in the automotive industry, ensuring optimal protection and performance for various applications.
