Polycoat Bitumen Emulsion
POLYCOAT BITUMEN EMULSION
Polycoat Bitumen Emulsion is a specialized type of bituminous coating that is used for various waterproofing and protective applications.Polycoat Bitumen Emulsion is a versatile, water-based bituminous coating designed for waterproofing and protective applications. It combines bitumen and water with emulsifying agents, creating a stable mixture that is easy to apply using brushes, rollers, or sprays. Ideal for roofs, basements, and metal surfaces, it offers excellent adhesion and forms a durable, flexible barrier against moisture, corrosion, and weathering. Its lower environmental impact, due to fewer VOC emissions, and enhanced safety from being non-flammable, make it a superior choice for construction and maintenance projects. Polycoat Bitumen Emulsion’s rapid drying time and long-lasting protection ensure structures remain safeguarded against environmental damage. Polycoat is a thixotropic bitumen emulsion manufactured to comply with ASTM D 1227 Type III Class 1 (Nonfibrated). The coating is dark brown in color and dries to a black flexible protective film. The finished film forms a barrier to water and vapor transmission.
USES OF POLYCOAT BITUMEN EMULSION
Polycoat emulsions are used for general waterproofing, damp-proofing and protective coating for below ground concrete structures. This can also be used for built-up roofing systems and other exposed surfaces, as a damp proofing membrane, as vapor seal or as a protective coating.Polycoat Bitumen Emulsion is widely used in construction for its effective waterproofing and protective qualities. It’s ideal for waterproofing roofs, basements, and foundations, forming a durable barrier against water penetration. In road construction, it serves as a primer, tack coat, and binder for surface dressing. It’s also used as a protective coating on concrete, masonry, and metal surfaces to guard against corrosion and weathering. Its ease of application and environmental benefits, such as lower VOC emissions, make it a preferred choice for ensuring long-lasting, reliable protection in various structural and infrastructure projects.
APPLICATIONS INSTRUCTIONS
Surface Preparation: Ensure that surface to be treated is sound and free from all oil, grease and other foreign matters. Cracks, potholes and honey combs are to be repaired with a suitable material from the Polycrete range of repair mortars.
Priming: Primer is always recommended prior to coating as it not only seals the porous substrate but also acts as an adhesion promoter for further coatings. The primer coat can be made in the site by diluting the same emulsion with 20% water. The primer may be applied by brush, roller or spray. Allow the primer to dry before any further coats are applied. However, if the primer coat is left open for more than 24 hours after it becomes dry, clean the surface of any settled dust and apply a fresh coat of the primer.
Application: Stir the contents of the drum thoroughly prior to application to remove any sediment. The application can be done with roller, brush or squeegee. Apply the 1st coat by a brush, roller or squeegee. Typically the coating applied @ 5m2/lt will give a Dry Film Thickness of 100 microns. The second coat is to be applied at the same rate and at right angles to the first coat. The first coat must be dry before applying the second coat. However, the coverage depends on the smoothness and porosity of the substrate and the required thickness of the coating.
Here’s a simplified overview:
-
Composition: Polycoat Bitumen Emulsion is made by dispersing bitumen (a sticky, black, and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum) in water with the help of emulsifying agents. This creates a stable mixture where bitumen droplets are suspended in water.
- Applications:
- Waterproofing: It is commonly used for waterproofing roofs, basements, foundations, and other structures. The emulsion forms a protective barrier that prevents water penetration.
- Protective Coating: It is applied as a protective coating on concrete, masonry, and metal surfaces to guard against moisture, corrosion, and weathering.
- Road Construction: In road construction, Polycoat Bitumen Emulsion can be used for priming, tack coating, and as a binder for surface dressing.
- Advantages:
- Ease of Application: Since it is water-based, Polycoat Bitumen Emulsion is easy to apply using brushes, rollers, or spray equipment.
- Environmental Benefits: It has a lower environmental impact compared to solvent-based bituminous products, as it emits fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
- Safety: Being water-based, it is less flammable and poses fewer health risks during application.
- Properties:
- Adhesion: It provides excellent adhesion to a variety of substrates, including concrete, brick, and metal.
- Flexibility: Once dried, the bitumen emulsion forms a flexible, resilient coating that can accommodate slight movements and thermal expansions of the substrate.
- Durability: It offers long-lasting protection against water, chemicals, and other environmental factors.
In summary, Polycoat Bitumen Emulsion is a versatile, water-based bituminous product used primarily for waterproofing and protecting structures from moisture and environmental damage. Its ease of application, environmental benefits, and durable protective properties make it a popular choice in both construction and maintenance projects.
