New steel drums come in four distinct types based on their height, namely the long new steel drum, short new steel drum, short new steel drum with a large lid, and the long new steel drum with a 200 kg capacity.

Among these, the long new steel drum is the most widely preferred, accounting for over 80% of our customers’ choices. It’s crucial to note that these steel drums differ in terms of net weight capacity, height, and body thickness.

Standardly, the most prevalent body thickness is 0.6 mm. Each drum type has its unique specifications, which it’s advisable to be familiar with before making your bitumen purchase.

LONG NEW STEEL DRUM SPECIFICATION

The long new steel drum boasts a bitumen capacity of 180 kg (±2.5 kg). A 20-foot container can be filled with 110 of these drums, resulting in a cargo weight of approximately 20 tons (±5%). The empty weight of each drum is 9.5 kg.

A 20-foot container can accommodate 110 short new steel drums, resulting in a total cargo weight of approximately 16.5 tons (±5%). Despite being more expensive than long drums, the short drum is the preferred choice in certain regions. The empty weight of each drum is 8.5 kg.

DISADVANTAGES OF DRUM PACKAGING

  2. Breakage Risk: Mishandling of new drums can lead to breakage. Damaged drums, even if they don’t break, can become challenging to decant.
  3. Bitumen Residue: Generally, a residual amount of 3-5% of bitumen is left in the drum, resulting in wastage.

ENVIROMENTAL IMPACK

Used drums typically contain residual bitumen, posing a potential risk of ground pollution and storage contamination. In response to environmental concerns, several countries have implemented stringent regulations governing the importation of bitumen in new steel drums.
