ASTM D946-09 is a standard specification by ASTM International for penetration-grade asphalt (bitumen) for use in pavement construction. It defines the physical and chemical requirements for viscosity, penetration, solubility, flash point, and ductility to ensure quality and performance in road applications.
This standard primarily applies to bitumen grades such as 40-50, 60-70, 85-100, and 120-150, commonly used in hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavements. However, ASTM D946-09 was withdrawn in 2017, as newer performance-based specifications like Superpave (ASTM D6373) have largely replaced it.
