Bitumen Emulsion RS-2
ANIONIC BITUMEN EMULSION RS-2 – OVERVIEW
Anionic Bitumen Emulsion RS-2 is a specially formulated rapid-setting asphalt emulsion that swiftly breaks and cures upon contact with aggregate surfaces. It is a water-based emulsified asphalt with a high viscosity and quick setting time, containing at least 57% bitumen. Primarily intended as a bituminous binder for chip seals, it exhibits a rich chocolate brown color and flows freely as a liquid under normal environmental conditions. Asphalt emulsions are classified based on the electric charge enveloping the asphalt particles within the emulsion (whether cationic or anionic) and the speed at which the suspended asphalt particles separate from the surrounding water (known as “breaking”). A slow-setting emulsion is designed to maximize the duration of mixing with aggregates. Prolonged workability allows for optimal coating on densely graded aggregates with a high fines content. It’s important to note that the setting speed of any emulsion is influenced by the atmospheric conditions present during construction.
KEY FEATURES OF THE PRODUCT
- Efficiently seals narrow cracks, preventing moisture infiltration.
- Allows for quick restoration of traffic soon after application.
- Particularly effective during the early spring and late fall seasons.
- Ensures a strong bond and tack between pavement layers, minimizing slippage planes.
- Well-suited for utilization with small, portable spray units.
APPLICATION OF ANIONIC BITUMEN EMULSION RS-2
Anionic bitumen emulsion RS-2 is obtained through the application of an electric field, causing droplets to migrate from the anode. It is a slow-setting, anionic type of bitumen with particle sizes ranging from 0.1 to 5 microns. The emulsifier commonly used to produce Anionic Asphalt Emulsion RS-2 is an alkaline salt with Ammonium Salt, which facilitates the bonding of bitumen and water droplets.
RECOMMENDED USE
RAHA OIL Bitumen Emulsion RS-2 is highly suitable for various applications, including surface dressing, grouting, and penetration macadam. Bitumen RS-2, commonly known as a Rapid Setting (RS) or Medium Setting Bitumen, is a type of bitumen that possesses properties suitable for various road construction applications.
The recommended use of Bitumen RS-2 includes:
-
Surface Dressing: Bitumen RS-2 is commonly used in surface dressing applications. Surface dressing involves the application of bitumen and aggregate to the existing road surface to improve its durability, skid resistance, and waterproofing.
- Prime Coat: It is suitable for use as a prime coat, which is applied to the prepared base course before laying the asphalt layers. The prime coat enhances the bond between the base course and the overlying asphalt layers.
- Tack Coat: Bitumen RS-2 is often used as a tack coat, applied between asphalt layers to promote adhesion. Tack coats help prevent delamination and improve the overall structural integrity of the pavement.
- Patch Repair: It can be used for patch repair work on roads and highways. Patch repair involves the removal of damaged or deteriorated sections of the road and the replacement with new bituminous material.
- Crack Sealing: Bitumen RS-2 can be used for crack sealing applications. Crack sealing involves filling or sealing cracks in the pavement to prevent water infiltration and further deterioration.
- Pothole Repair: It is suitable for the repair of potholes in road surfaces. Pothole repair involves cleaning the damaged area, applying bitumen, and filling with suitable aggregate.
- Small-Scale Road Construction: Bitumen RS-2 is used in small-scale road construction projects where rapid setting properties are beneficial for efficient construction processes.
-
Maintenance Projects: It is commonly employed in maintenance projects for road rejuvenation, ensuring the longevity and performance of existing road infrastructure.
Bitumen RS-2 is characterized by its relatively rapid curing time and provides good adhesion properties. However, the specific application and recommended use may vary based on regional specifications, climate conditions, and project requirements. It’s important to follow industry standards and guidelines for the proper use of Bitumen RS-2 in road construction applications.
GUIDELINES FOR APPLICATION
- Thoroughly clean the asphalt surface and address any oil spots before applying the product to ensure optimal adhesion.
- Avoid application if there is an expectation of precipitation.
- Refrain from diluting the product with any cutter stock or water.
- The spray rate should be adjusted according to the specific application type.
- For application temperature guidelines, kindly consult a RAHA OIL Marketing representative.
BENEFITS OF APHALT EMULSION RS-2
- No heating necessary, saving time and energy.
- Cost-efficient option.
- Facilitates easy and uniform spraying.
- Rapid setting time, even at low temperatures.
- Exhibits high adhesive properties, enhancing bond strength.
- Prevents slippage between structural layers.
- Environmentally friendly.
- Aids in surface rejuvenation.
STORAGE AND HANDLING OF RS-2
For optimal storage, RS-2 should be kept in bulk tanks, preferably in a vertical orientation to minimize surface area. To maintain its integrity, RS-2 must not be exposed to freezing or boiling temperatures, as this will cause it to break down. Safe storage temperatures range from 10°C (50°F) to 85°C (185°F). When stored in bulk, it is recommended to mix RS-2 every 1 to 2 weeks, or more frequently in colder weather. Mixing can be accomplished using a paddle agitator (at a slow pace), loose gear pump, slow centrifugal pump, or any other suitable low shear pump. Avoid agitating RS-2 by bubbling air through it, as this can lead to excessive foam formation and potential breakdown of the emulsion. Always employ clean storage containers and ensure that any previous contents are compatible with RS-2 to prevent emulsion breakdown. For sampling the emulsion, utilize approved and sealed containers exclusively.
