Bitumen Emulsion CSS-1
CATIONIC BITUMEN EMULSION CSS-1
AN IN-DEPTH OVERVIEW
Bitumen Emulsion CSS-1 consists of three basic ingredients: bitumen, water, and an emulsifying agent. Based on specifications it may contain other additives, such as stabilizers, coating improvers, anti-strips, or break control agents. It is well known that water and asphalt will not mix, except under carefully controlled conditions using highly specialized equipment and chemical additives. Emulsion Bitumen CSS-1 is a cationic emulsion. Bitumen emulsion CSS-1 are usually made by passing the mixture of hot bitumen and water phase between a rotating disc, cone or wheel and a stator. In the emulsification process, the hot binder is mechanically separated into minute globules and dispersed in water treated with a small quantity of emulsifying agent. The water is called the continuous phase and the globules of the binder are called the discontinuous phase.by proper selection of an emulsifying agent and other manufacturing controls. Cationic bitumen emulsions CSS-1 have a positive charge and hence a direct and very rapid reaction between the emulsion and an aggregate or pavement is possible. The size of the charge or the Zeta potential affects stability, the larger the charge the greater the repulsion, but as the aggregate is negatively charged the higher the zeta potential the more rapid the reaction. So, it is possible to stabilize a cationic emulsion in the same way that makes it a more rapid break. The other mechanism of evaporation is available too but as the emulsion is stabilized this form of break becomes slower. Thus, a balance must be struck. After the electrostatic part of the reaction is complete the emulsion will rely on flocculation and coalescence to complete break.
MAIN APPLICATION OF CATIONIC EMULSION CSS-1
THE MAIN APPLICATIONS OF BITUMEN EMULSION CSS-1 ARE AS BELOW:
- Prime Coat
- Seal Coat
- Slurry Seal
- Fog Seal
- Coating the Pipelines
- Bitumen Sheet Membrane
ADVANTAGE OF BITUMEN EMULSION CSS-1
- Since this type of bitumen consists of water, it is eco-friendly compared to cut back bitumen which consists of petroleum base solvent.
- It has a good adhesion property which can be used in protective asphalts to maintain and repair the asphalt surface on the road.
- It is long lasting and durable. It can penetrate into the cracks well.
- It doesn’t require any heat before using.
- It can be applied on surfaces that are wet and damp. It can be used in the rainy weather and humidity.
- It is economical compared to cut back bitumen. Generally, this type of bitumen is a good substitute for cut back bitumen.
TEST OF EMULSION
To become sure about the quality of different types of bitumen emulsion, several types of bitumen emulsion tests can be applied on them. In the below.
THE MAIN BITUMEN EMULSION TESTS THAT ARE DONE ON CSS-1 ARE CLARIFIED:
- Residue by Evaporation Test
- Sieve Test
- Saybolt Viscosity Test
- Distillation Test
- Storage Stability Test
- Density Test
HANDLING AND STORAGE OF CSS-1
There exist different ways to store and handle the bitumen emulsion.
- To avoid freezing of emulsion water, do not allow temperature to fall below 2°C.
- The emulsion should be stored in storage tanks that will prevent it from freezing or overheating.
- Since emulsion can freeze in the cold weather, it is necessary to have a gentle agitation by blenders in the tank.
- Pay attention to the bitumen emulsion CSS1 temperature not to exceed 100 °C or water boiling point.
- Pay attention to the hoses and connections while handling and transferring the bitumen emulsion from tankers to tanks.
INTERNATIONAL INSPECTION
Besides the bitumen emulsion tests in the factory, an agent from an international inspection company like SGS or Geo-Chem as a third notify party will attend in the customs and take samples of the product. Then the sample of Bitumen Emulsion CSS1 will be tested and after confirming the parameters, the quality of Bitumen Emulsion CSS-1 is approved, and it can be exported without any issue.
