Anionic Bitumen Emulsion SS-1
DESCRIPTION OF ANIONIC BITUMEN EMULSION SS-1
Anionic Bitumen Emulsions SS-1 have several grades depending on its breaking characteristics. This breaking process is predominantly dependent on the evaporation rate of the water in the emulsion. The more higher the water evaporation rate, the more rapid the setting is. Different setting rate is crucial as different application requires different setting rates. Rapid setting emulsions are usually used in surface dressing while slow or medium setting emulsions are usually used for mixtures. Anionic emulsions carries negative charge, compared to cationic emulsions which carries positive charge. When an anionic emulsion is mixed with a cationic emulsion, a strong bond develop and changing the substance to a solid. This is unfavorable as it cannot be applied to substrates. OurBitumen Emulsions SS-1 grade anionic bitumen emulsion is a slow setting, anionic, bitumen emulsion. They are further characterized by their ability to remain stable on storage although produced with equipment that generates a wide range of shearing forces. Such characteristics are imparted to the asphalt emulsions through the use of emulsion conditioner compositions comprising a partially desulfonated lugonosulfonate, preferably an anionic or non-ionic emulsifying agent and, optionally, a thickener. Bitumen Emulsions SS-1 is an anionic slow setting asphalt emulsion primarily used as a tack coat – typically providing that “glue” to bond an existing base pavement layer to a newly applied layer. Ensuring emulsion sets before new layer is placed facilitates good bonding to prevent slippage which is crucial for the structural performance of the final pavement. SS-1 dilutes well with water to provide lower residue as required by provincial and municipal agencies. SS-1 can also be used appropriately where coating, bonding and waterproofing may be required.
APPLICATION OF BITUMEN EMULSION SS-1
- Asphalt Surface
- Pavement
- Surface Treatment
Bitumen Emulsions SS-1 is used for Prime Coat application and perform several important functions such as coating and bonding loose mineral particles on the surface of the base, hardening and toughening the surface of the base, waterproofing the surface of the base by plugging capillary or interconnected voids, and providing adhesion or bond between the base and the asphalt mixture. This grade of emulsion penetrate quite deep in WMM / WBM surface providing an effective Prime Coat. Bitumen Emulsion SS1 is slow-setting, anionic type and are further characterized by their ability to remain stable on storage although produced with equipment that generates a wide range of shearing forces. Such characteristics are imparted to the asphalt emulsions through the use of emulsion-conditioner compositions comprising a partially desulfonated lignosulfonate, preferably an anionic or nonionic emulsifying agent and, optionally, a thickene.
ADVANTAGE OF ANIONIC SS-1
- Since this type of bitumen consists of water, it is eco-friendly compared to cut back bitumen which consists of petroleum base solvent.
- It has a good adhesion property which can be used in protective asphalts to maintain and repair the asphalt surface on the road.
- It is long lasting and durable. It can penetrate into the cracks well.
- It doesn’t require any heat before using.
- It can be applied on surfaces that are wet and damp. It can be used in the rainy weather and humidity.
BITUMEN EMULSION SS-1
To become sure about the quality of different types of bitumen emulsion, several types of bitumen emulsion tests can be applied on them. In the below, the main bitumen emulsion tests that are done on SS-1 are clarified:
- Residue by Evaporation Test
- Sieve Test
- Saybolt Viscosity Test
- Distillation Test
- Storage Stability Test
- Density Test
BITUMEN EMULSION SS-1 HANDLING AND STORAGE
- There exists different ways to store and handle the bitumen emulsion.
- To avoid freezing of emulsion water, do not allow temperature to fall below 2°C.
- The emulsion should be stored in storage tanks that will prevent it from freezing or overheating.
- Since emulsion can freeze in the cold weather, it is necessary to have a gentle agitation by blenders in the tank.
- Pay attention to the bitumen emulsion CSS1 temperature not to exceed 100 °C or water boiling point.
- Pay attention to the hoses and connections while handling and transferring the bitumen emulsion from tankers to tanks.
TYPE OF PACKING BITUMEN EMULSION SS-1
Bitumen Emulsion SS-1 can be packed in different types of packing. Since this bitumen is liquid bitumen and it is a combination of different materials, it is important to use a suitable type of packing that is not subjected to environmental conditions and the product will not be damaged.
The suitable packing for bitumen emulsion SS-1 are as below:
- New Steel Drum
- Barrel
- IBC
- Flexi tank
- Reconditioned drums
