APPLICATIONS OF STEEL DRUMS
Steel drums are widely accepted for bitumen packaging globally, serving as a reliable container for various liquid and pasty materials. It’s important to note that, to accommodate thermal expansion, drums should not be completely filled.
Here are some industrial applications of steel drums:
- Bitumen: Steel drums are commonly used for packaging and transporting bitumen.
- Minerals: They serve as effective containers for certain mineral products.
- Engine Oil: Steel drums are utilized for the storage and transportation of engine oil.
- Grease and Petroleum Products: These drums find application in packaging and transporting grease and various petroleum-based products.
ADVANTAGES OF DRUM PACKAGING
Drum packaging offers several advantages:
- Preservation of Bitumen Quality: Drums have no adverse effects on the physical or chemical properties of bitumen, ensuring its quality remains intact.
- Proportional Size and Dimensions: Drums are designed with well-proportioned sizes and dimensions, facilitating convenient handling and storage.
- UV Protection: Drums provide a protective shield for bitumen against the harmful effects of UV rays from the sun.
- Container Compatibility: Drums are easily accommodated in containers, streamlining the transportation process.
- Safety for Flammable Materials: Drums are a suitable and secure packaging option for transporting flammable materials, ensuring safety throughout the supply chain.
DISADVANTAGES OF DRUM PACKAGING
Despite its advantages, drum packaging comes with some drawbacks:
- Potential for Leakage: Used drums may develop leaks, posing a risk of bitumen spillage.
- Breakage Risk: Mishandling of new drums can lead to breakage. Damaged drums, even if they don’t break, can become challenging to decant.
- Bitumen Residue: Generally, a residual amount of 3-5% of bitumen is left in the drum, resulting in wastage.
ENVIROMENTAL IMPACK
Used drums typically contain residual bitumen, posing a potential risk of ground pollution and storage contamination. In response to environmental concerns, several countries have implemented stringent regulations governing the importation of bitumen in new steel drums.
